EASY STEPS. BUILD YOUR OWN

Part 1: BUILD

Choosing and Setting Up Your System

Before growing, you must engineer the environment. Focus on the three most scalable systems for beginners and pros alike.

  • Deep Water Culture (DWC): The simplest "reservoir" method. Roots are submerged in aerated nutrient solution.
  • Nutrient Film Technique (NFT): A constant flow of nutrients over roots in slanted channels. Best for leafy greens.
  • Ebb and Flow (Flood and Drain): Periodically flooding the root zone. Ideal for larger, heavy-feeding plants.

Part 2: MIX

The Chemistry of Growth

Hydroponics is science-led. You aren't just watering plants; you are managing a biological engine.

The Nutrient Solution

Plants need 16 essential elements, primarily Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K).

  • The Mix: Always use "Hydroponic-specific" fertilizers. Soil fertilizers lack the micronutrients needed for water-only environments.
  • The Order of Operations: Always add Silica first (if using), then Micro, then Grow/Bloom components to avoid nutrient lockout.

The Vital Signs (PH and EC)

  • pH Level: Keep it between 5.5 and 6.5. If the pH is off, the plant becomes "blind" and cannot see the nutrients.
  • Electrical Conductivity (EC): This measures the concentration of salts.
  • Seedlings: 0.8 - 1.2
  • Vegetative: 1.21.8
  • Flowering/Fruiting: 1.8 - 2.4

Part 3: GROW

From Seed to Harvest

Execution is where most hobbyists fail. Focus on the lifecycle management.

Phase 1: Germination & Early Growth

Use Rockwool cubes or Rapid Rooters. Avoid starting in soil and transplanting to hydro, as this introduces pathogens like Pythium (root rot).

Phase 2: Environmental Control (VPD)

Monitor your Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD). It’s the relationship between temperature and humidity that dictates how fast a plant "breathes" (transpires).

  • Lights: Use Full-Spectrum LEDs. Target a DLI (Daily Light Integral) appropriate for your specific crop.

Phase 3: The Harvest & System Flush

Two weeks before harvest, reduce nutrient concentration (flushing) to force the plant to use its stored sugars, improving the final flavor and quality of the produce.

Summary Checklist for Success

  • Oxygen is King: Always ensure your air pumps are oversized; you cannot over-oxygenate the water.
  • Sterility: Treat your reservoir like an operating room.
  • Monitoring: Log your $pH$ and $EC$ daily. Data is the key to repeating your success.
