1. Deep Water Culture (DWC) – The "Bucket" Method

  • Best for: Large, thirsty plants (Tomatoes, Peppers, Squash).
  • Skill Level: Beginner.
  • The Logic: Plants sit in net pots suspended over a reservoir of nutrient-rich water. An air stone keeps the water oxygenated so the roots don't "drown."

The Blueprint:

  1. Drill a hole in the lid of a 5-gallon black bucket (black prevents algae).
  2. Install an air pump outside the bucket, connected to an air stone inside.
  3. Fill with nutrients until the bottom 1/2 inch of the net pot is submerged.
  4. Place your seedling in clay pebbles (hydroton).

2. Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) – The "Commercial" Choice

  • Best for: Leafy greens and herbs (Lettuce, Basil, Kale).
  • Skill Level: Intermediate.
  • The Logic: A very shallow stream (a "film") of nutrient water flows down a PVC channel, passing over the tips of the roots before draining back into a central reservoir.

The Blueprint:

  1. Set up PVC channels at a slight 1% to 2% slope.
  2. Plumb a submersible pump in the reservoir to the high end of the channels.
  3. Create a return line at the low end to cycle water back to the tank.
  4. Cycle the pump 24/7. If the pump stops, the roots dry out in minutes.

3. Ebb and Flow (Flood and Drain) – The "Versatile" Bench

  • Best for: Root crops or high-density nurseries.
  • Skill Level: Intermediate.
  • The Logic: A tray is periodically flooded with nutrients and then allowed to drain completely. This pulls fresh oxygen into the root zone as the water recedes.

The Blueprint:

  1. Position a grow tray above a reservoir.
  2. Install an overflow drain (to prevent spills) and a fill nozzle.
  3. Connect a timer to your pump. Set it to "Flood" for 15 minutes, 3–4 times per day.
  4. Fill the tray with grow media like rockwool or perlite.
